ISO 20121 standard – conducting events in a sustainable way

The ISO 20121 standard, inspired by the London Olympics Games, aims to organize events, from local events to major events such as the Olympics, which minimize the negative impact on the environment, society and the local economy and maximize:
• The efficiency of the event,
• Energy management and
• The support of all stakeholders.
ISO 20121 has been developed for the event industry to contribute to the prioritization of sustainability in the management and delivery of each event. The standard takes into account the geographical area, cultural, social and demographic data of each event. ISO 20121 allows the company to identify in advance all the possible effects of the event, in order to take appropriate decisions to reduce or prevent the negative effects. As a result, a long-term perspective is adopted in the organization of an event which ultimately allows its sustainability and acceptance by the citizens. Based on the British standard BS 8901, ISO 20121 was published in time for the Olympic Games and contributed to the viability of the event.
