 Agrotourism is a mild form of sustainable tourist development and multi-activity in rural areas. The Rural tourism, if it is well-designed and well-organized, is one of the most effective tools for long-term preservation of a place identity.
ELOT in collaboration with the Tourism Development Inc. and the Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) issued ELOT 1417 "Agrotourism: Terminology and general requirements for tourism services". The standard applies to businesses operating in agro tourist destinations and provide one or more of the following services:
- Accommodation
- Catering
- Activities in Nature
- Environmental awareness & training
- Acquaintance with the culture of a region, visits to historical and other attractions, participation in outdoor recreation
- Meet traditional occupations, agricultural production and farming methods and production processes that are no longer exist
The model also specifies general requirements for the functioning of agro-enterprises. These requirements relate to the following seven distinct sub-sectors of doing business:
1. Legislative and regulatory function (licenses, restrictions, etc.)
2. Building Code and Operating Conditions (architectural features, building materials, equipment, insurance, etc.)
3. Environment (environmental management program, environmental measures, etc.)
4. Local features (promotion of the special cultural and physical characteristics of the area, use and promotion of local products, etc.)
5. Human resources (jobs, education and training staff)
6. Customer (communication, satisfaction measurement, continuous improvement)
7. Synergy-Rivalry-Networking-Competitiveness-Innovation
The company when certified receives the sign Agrotourism Quality
