BRC Issue 5- British Retail Consortium- Global Standard for Food Safety

The BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard for Food Safety was created to ensure supplier compliance and secure retailers' ability to guarantee the quality and safety of the food products they sell. Today it is used worldwide as a framework for any business (retailers and processors) to assist the production of safe food and the selection of reliable suppliers.

The standard is being adopted by food suppliers throughout the world and especially for those organizations supplying British retailers. Certification to the standard helps manufacturers, brand owners and retailers fulfill their legal obligations whilst ultimately safeguarding the consumer. The standard possesses a comprehensive scope covering all areas of product safety and legality and addresses part of the due diligence requirements of both the supplier and the retailer.

The principal requirements of the standard are the adoption and implementation of HACCP, a documented and effective quality management system and control of factory environmental standards, products, processes and personnel.

Certifying your food management system against the requirements of the BRC's Global Standard for Food Safety, will bring the following benefits to your organization:

  • Enhances your food safety and food safety management system
  • Shows your commitment to producing safe food
  • Achieves recognition and acceptance from the UK retailer community
  • Increases your customers product safety and quality confidence
Reduces the number of supplier audits/assessments.
