ISO Guide 34 specifies the requirements a Reference Material (RM) Producer, must meet in order to be recognized as competent in the manufacture of reference materials. The purpose of Guide 34 is to provide a standardization of RM Producer quality systems such that the end user of a RM can be assured that the concentration of the product stated on the certificate of analysis for a Certified Reference Material (CRM) is accurate and that it exists within the range specified on the certificate of analysis.
Guide 34 provides a mechanism by which the uncertainty around a CRM's concentration can be estimated and then stated on the certificate of analysis. Several ISO Guides are employed as normative references to Guide 34. They include; Guide 30, Terms and Definitions Used in Connection with Reference Materials, Guide 31, Reference Materials - Contents of Certificates and Labels and Guide 35, Reference Materials - General and Statistical Principles for Certification. Additional documents are referenced for general or specific information such as the GUM (Evaluation of Measurement Data - Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement) and the VIM (International vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology).
