Proficiency Testing (PT) is the determination of participant (laboratory, organization or individual) performance by means of interlaboratory comparisons.
ISO / IEC 17043 specifies general requirements for the competence of providers of proficiency testing schemes and for the development and operation of proficiency testing schemes. These requirements are intended to be general for all types of proficiency testing schemes, and they can be used as a basis for specific technical requirements for particular fields of application.
For the purposes of ISO / IEC 17043, the term proficiency testing is taken in its widest sense and includes but is not limited to:
a) quantitative schemes
b) qualitative schemes
c) sequential scheme
d) bulk interlaboratory testing
e) single occasion exercises
f) continuous schemes
g) sampling schemes
h) data transformation and interpretation schemes
The Accreditation Body (ESYD in Greece) attests that a provider of proficiency testing schemes has demonstrated that:
- it is competent to organize specific proficiency testing schemes
- its management system is documented, fully operational and addresses and conforms to all elements of ISO/IEC 17043
- it is operating in accordance with its management system
- it conforms to any additional requirements of the Accreditation Body or specific fields or programs necessary to meet particular user needs
